About

Hagurosan Sanko-in is a Toge-district shukubo at the foot of Haguro-san, located about a 7-minute walk from the Zuijinmon gateway that marks the start of the 2,446 stone-step approach to the summit. The lodge has 8 private guest rooms and a maximum capacity of around 50 people, large enough to host traditional Dewa Sanzan pilgrim groups while still accepting individual guests. Sanko-in is one of the Touge shukubo officially listed by the Haguro Tourism Association as accepting overseas visitors and infants, with Western-style toilets installed in the guest area — an important practical detail in this otherwise very traditional district. The lodge serves Dewa Sanzan shojin ryori built around sesame tofu, sansai (mountain herbs), kinome dengaku and mushrooms gathered from the nearby beech forests, and uniquely also offers shojin ryori as a lunch-only option for day visitors who book at least three days in advance for parties of five or more — a rare chance to taste Touge yamabushi cuisine without staying overnight. Mornings include a Shinto-style service and an in-house goma fire prayer can be requested. Bookings are by phone direct to the lodge.
