Pure Land Morning Service in Chion-in's Mieido

Every morning at 6:00, guests are invited into the Mieido Hall — a National Treasure — for the daily Pure Land service of chanting and Nembutsu recitation, conducted by Chion-in's monks 365 days a year.

Right Beside the Sanmon Gate

Wajun Kaikan stands directly in front of the Chion-in Sanmon, Japan's largest temple gate and a designated National Treasure. Guests can step out the door and into the temple precinct in seconds.

Headquarters of the Jodo (Pure Land) Sect

Chion-in is the head temple of the Jodo-shu Pure Land school, founded in 1234 in honor of Honen (1133–1212). Wajun Kaikan is its official lodging — a way to experience overnight at the very source of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism.

About

Chion-in Wajun Kaikan is the official lodging of Chion-in, the head temple of the Jodo-shu (Pure Land) school of Japanese Buddhism, founded in 1234 to honor the teachings of Honen (1133–1212). The hotel sits directly in front of the famous Sanmon main gate of Chion-in — Japan's largest temple gate and a designated National Treasure — and is set within the temple's green Higashiyama precinct, a few minutes' walk from Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park, and the historic streets of Gion. Guests choose from 50 rooms in three styles — Japanese tatami, Western, and Japanese-Western — all with private bath and WiFi, and there are barrier-free rooms with wide doorways. A traditional Japanese-style public bath, Buddhist gift shop, and the on-site Kasuian restaurant complete the facilities. The signature experience is the morning Buddhist service: at 6:00 every morning, 365 days a year, monks of Chion-in conduct chanting and Nembutsu recitation in the Mieido (National Treasure), and Wajun Kaikan guests are personally welcomed in. Sutra-copying (shakyo) experiences and special seasonal Buddhist programs are also offered through the temple.
