Five Traditional Gardens

The temple grounds feature five distinct gardens — including a pond garden, moss garden, and stone garden — that surround the main hall and guest wings.

Onsen Hot Spring Bath

Unusually for a Koyasan shukubo, Soji-in offers an onsen-style hot spring bath, allowing guests to soak after a day of pilgrimage.

Vegan Shojin Ryori

All meals are fully plant-based — no eggs, dairy, or meat — and the kitchen accommodates gluten-free requests, making Soji-in one of the most allergy-friendly shukubo on Mt. Koya.

About

Soji-in (総持院) was founded during the Kyuan era (1145–1151) of the Heian period by Gyoe-sojibo, the 28th overseer of Mt. Koya. Originally located within the precincts of the Danjo Garan, the temple was later relocated to its present site directly west of Kongobu-ji and in front of the Garan complex. Today Soji-in is one of the most highly rated shukubo in Koyasan, known for its five distinct gardens — pond, moss, and stone — that ring the main buildings, and for an onsen-style hot spring bath that is rare among Mt. Koya temples. Guest rooms are private, air-conditioned, and equipped with private toilets; suite rooms with private bath are also available. The kitchen is celebrated for fully vegan shojin ryori prepared without eggs, dairy, or meat, with gluten-free options on request. Optional programs include afternoon meditation and the Okunoin night walking tour. The 6:00 a.m. morning service in the main hall is open to all guests. Soji-in stands within the UNESCO World Heritage core of Koyasan.

Upon arrival, you'll be provided with a yukata (light cotton robe) and a pair of slippers. You can wear the yukata throughout the ryokan — to dinner, to the onsen, and even for a stroll in the neighborhood. Indoor slippers should be removed before stepping on tatami mats.
