Top-tier ryokans during peak season
Luxury properties during cherry blossom (late March-April) or autumn foliage (October-November) season. Golden Week and New Year's.
Popular ryokans, any season
Well-known properties in Hakone, Kyoto, and Kinosaki. Weekend stays at any popular destination.
Mid-range ryokans, weekdays
Good selection still available for weekday stays. Shoulder season (May-June, September) offers more flexibility.
Last-minute availability
Still possible for lesser-known ryokans or off-season weekdays. Worth checking — cancellations open up great properties.

需要告知旅馆的事项

Dietary restrictions
Kaiseki relies heavily on seafood and dashi. Communicate vegetarian, vegan, halal, or allergy needs clearly — most ryokans accommodate with advance notice.
Arrival time
Check-in is typically 3:00-5:00 PM. Dinner is served at a fixed time (usually 6:00-7:00 PM), so late arrivals risk missing the meal.
Tattoo policy
Many onsen traditionally prohibit visible tattoos. If you have tattoos, confirm the policy and ask about private bath options.
Room preference
Private onsen rooms (rotenburo-tsuki) are worth the upgrade. Specify garden view, higher floor, or accessible room if needed.
Transportation
Many ryokans offer free shuttle service from the nearest station — but only if you reserve in advance.
Payment
Booking online means your payment is handled. But bring cash for on-site extras like drinks, spa treatments, or gift shop purchases.
