Tetsuryu-Kutsu Guest Wing

Eight private en-suite rooms in the "Cave of the Enlightened Dragon," each with traditional tatami, private shower, toilet, and AC — a rare modern comfort for a centuries-old Myoshin-ji sub-temple.

Founded by the Hori Family in 1590

Established in 1590 by Horio Yoshiharu in memory of his son, Shunkoin holds an important Nanban-style bell from the early Christian missions to Japan, alongside a contemplative Zen garden.

About

Shunkoin is a sub-temple of Myoshin-ji, the largest Rinzai Zen temple complex in Kyoto, founded in 1590 by Horio Yoshiharu in memory of his eldest son. Today the temple is widely regarded as the most foreigner-friendly shukubo in Kyoto: the vice abbot leads 90-minute Zen meditation classes, garden walks, and history lectures entirely in English nearly every morning. Lodging is provided in the Tetsuryu-Kutsu ("Cave of the Enlightened Dragon") guest wing, completed in 2013, with eight private rooms that combine traditional tatami flooring with private shower, toilet, and air-conditioning — an unusually comfortable setup for a working Zen temple. Guests have access to a shared kitchen and dining lounge, free coffee and tea, free bicycle rental, and a small contemplative garden. Although meals are not served, vegetarian-friendly restaurants and convenience stores are within walking distance. Shunkoin is also home to a rare Nanban-style temple bell linked to the early Christian missions to Japan, an unusual artifact for a Zen sub-temple.
