Shigisan Senju-in

A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn featuring tatami-mat rooms, futon bedding, communal or private baths, and multi-course kaiseki meals. Guests typically wear yukata (cotton robes) provided by the inn. A ryokan stay is one of the most authentic cultural experiences Japan has to offer.

Upon arrival, you'll be provided with a yukata (light cotton robe) and a pair of slippers. You can wear the yukata throughout the ryokan — to dinner, to the onsen, and even for a stroll in the neighborhood. Indoor slippers should be removed before stepping on tatami mats.

Shigisan Senju-in has limited English support. We recommend using a translation app or asking your hotel concierge to help with any pre-arrival communication. The staff is very welcoming and will do their best to assist.

Yes, Shigisan Senju-in can prepare vegetarian meals. Japanese Buddhist cuisine (shojin ryori) is naturally plant-based and beautifully presented. Please inform the ryokan of your dietary requirements at least 2 days before arrival so the chef can prepare accordingly.

Yes, most ryokans including Shigisan Senju-in offer luggage storage for guests arriving before check-in time. You can also use coin lockers at the nearest station or luggage delivery services (takkyubin) to send bags directly from the airport or previous hotel.

Shigisan Senju-in may have limited credit card acceptance. We recommend having Japanese yen (cash) available. ATMs at convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart) accept international cards.

The nearest station is Shigisanshita Station (Kintetsu Ikoma Line) / JR Oji Station, approximately 12 minutes on foot. You can reach it by local train, subway, or taxi. The ryokan can provide detailed walking directions upon request.

Booking Shigisan Senju-in takes about 5 minutes once you know the steps. Step 1 — Choose your booking route. For the fastest English-language booking we recommend Stay22; or you can reserve directly via the temple’s own website. Step 2 — Check date availability early. Shukubo rooms are limited (most temples have only 5–20 rooms), so popular dates in cherry-blossom season (late March–April), Golden Week (early May), Obon (mid-August) and autumn leaves (November) sell out 2–3 months ahead. Step 3 — Confirm meals and arrival time. Most shukubo include dinner and breakfast (shojin ryori — Buddhist vegetarian cuisine). Dinner is served around 18:00, so plan to arrive by 16:30–17:00. Arriving after dinner is served can mean missing the meal entirely. Step 4 — Note the curfew and morning service. Most temples lock the front gate at 21:00 or 22:00. Morning service (gongyo) is at 06:00–06:30; guests are welcome — and often gently encouraged — to attend. For tattoos, dietary restrictions, or wheelchair access, contact the temple a few days in advance to confirm.

Plan to arrive at Shigisan Senju-in between 15:00 and 17:00. This is not a hotel — dinner is served at a fixed time (usually around 18:00) and the temple kitchen prepares each meal individually. Late arrival can mean missing dinner. If your train will arrive after 17:00, contact the temple at least one day in advance to ask whether late check-in is possible.

Yes. Shigisan Senju-in and most shukubo lock the front gate between 21:00 and 22:00. Once locked you cannot re-enter until the morning. Plan dinner outside the temple, sightseeing, or onsen visits to finish before the curfew. If you need to be out later (e.g. an evening fire ceremony elsewhere on the mountain), ask staff at check-in — some temples can arrange a side-door key.

Attendance at the morning service (gongyo, around 06:00–06:30) is optional at Shigisan Senju-in but warmly encouraged — it is one of the most quietly memorable parts of a shukubo stay. Service lasts 30–60 minutes and is free. Sit at the back, follow along; no Buddhist knowledge required. Breakfast is served immediately after.
