Highlights

Morning Service at the National Treasure Konponchudo

Overnight guests are escorted to a 6:30 morning service inside Konponchudo, the national treasure main hall, in front of the "Eternal Light" lit by Saicho 1,200 years ago. Guests' names are read aloud during the sutra recitation.

The Only Shukubo on Mt. Hiei

Run directly by Enryaku-ji, this is the sole lodging within the UNESCO World Heritage temple grounds. Many rooms overlook Lake Biwa and offer dramatic sunrise views over the water.

Shikan Meditation and Sutra Copying

Guests can take part in Tendai shikan-style sit-stop meditation (45 minutes including instruction) at 11:00 or 14:30, or copy sutras (~90 minutes) by appointment. Both are conducted by resident monks.

About

Enryakuji Kaikan is the only lodging facility within the precincts of Hieizan Enryaku-ji, the head temple of Tendai Buddhism founded in 788 by Saicho (Dengyo Daishi) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Operated directly by Enryaku-ji, the kaikan stands in the Toto (East Tower) area, just a few minutes' walk from the National Treasure Konponchudo. Guests sleep in 54 spacious rooms, many of which overlook Lake Biwa, and breakfast and dinner consist of seasonal shojin ryori specialties — yuba (tofu skin) being a particular signature. Each morning at 6:30 (7:00 from December to February), overnight guests are guided into Konponchudo for a sutra recitation in front of the "Fumetsu-no-Hoto," the eternal lamp said to have been lit by Saicho himself 1,200 years ago. Guests can also try Tendai shikan meditation at 11:00 or 14:30 and join shakyo sutra-copying sessions in the temple. The lobby café "Reiho" serves a popular Sanskrit-character latte, and some Western-style rooms with beds are available alongside traditional tatami rooms. With cable-car access and direct connections to Kyoto and Otsu, this is the most convenient way for international visitors to spend a night inside one of Japan's most important Buddhist mountains.
