The only shukubo on Mt. Hiei, located inside UNESCO-listed Enryaku-ji with a 6:30 morning service in the National Treasure Konponchudo and panoramic Lake Biwa views.
Overnight guests are escorted to a 6:30 morning service inside Konponchudo, the national treasure main hall, in front of the "Eternal Light" lit by Saicho 1,200 years ago. Guests' names are read aloud during the sutra recitation.
Run directly by Enryaku-ji, this is the sole lodging within the UNESCO World Heritage temple grounds. Many rooms overlook Lake Biwa and offer dramatic sunrise views over the water.
Guests can take part in Tendai shikan-style sit-stop meditation (45 minutes including instruction) at 11:00 or 14:30, or copy sutras (~90 minutes) by appointment. Both are conducted by resident monks.
